Eyes are the windows through which humans observe the world, and Eye protection has always been a focus of attention. With changes in people's lifestyles and working conditions, as well as population aging and excessive use of electronic products, the global prevalence of ophthalmology continues to increase. It is expected that the number of patients will continue to grow at a compound growth rate of about 3%.

Market demand continues to promote the design and development of new ophthalmic treatments.

Ectoine ——a compatible solute from extreme halophiles,is developed as a Novel Eye Care Solution.

Part1 Protective Protein

Proteins perform specific functions through their unique spatial structure. Ectoine can associate numerous water molecules to form a hydration layer around the protein, which plays a protective role, thereby stabilizing the protein structure and ensuring the functional activity of the protein.

As an important defensive protein on the surface of the eyeballs, lysozyme has the highest content in tears, accounting for 20-40% of the total protein in tears, and plays an important role in resisting bacterial infection

The detection of lysozyme activity in controlled experiment shows that the lysozyme activity is 12.5% in 1% Ectoine group compared with 3.2% in zero Ectoine group. It can be seen that Ectoine can significantly protect the activity of lysozyme, and as the concentration of Ectoine increases, the protective effect is enhanced.

Part2 Protect Cell Membrane

Stabilize the tear film lipid layer

The fluidity of cell membrane is closely related to many functions of biomembrane, and it is essential for cells to carry out normal biological activities.

Ectoine orients the water molecules,  hydrates the outer polar ends of phospholipid molecules, enhances the fluidity of biomembranes, protects cells from damage by external substances such as allergens, and maintains the normal biological activities of cells.

The physiological function of the tear film is to lubricate the surface of the eyeball, prevent dryness of the cornea and conjunctiva, maintain the optical properties of the cornea, wash away, and resist foreign bodies and microorganisms on the surface of the eyeball. The lipid layer is located on the outermost surface of the tear film. This double-layer structure is composed of the outer layer of non-polar lipids and the inner layer of mainly polar phospholipid. Ectoine aligns the water molecules, hydrates the polar phospholipid layer, increases the fluidity of the lipid layer, improves the stability of the tear film, and maintains its normal physiological functions.

Part3 Eye Damage Repair

Ultraviolet damage and mechanical damage caused by long-term wearing of contact lenses can cause eye discomfort. Ectoine can effectively prevent damage and accelerate damage repair. Experiment shows that both 1.0% and 2.0% Ectoine can effectively promote the damage repair of corneal cells.

BloomectoTMcan effectively protect lysozyme, stabilize tear film, resist and repair external damage to the eye. When Ectoine is compounded with HA, due to the moisture retention and high viscosity properties of HA, the compound keeps the cornea and conjunctiva moist, and prolongs the residence time on the ocular surface, thus playing a synergistic effect.
